CORBIN — Girls Top 5

1. South Laurel Lady Cardinals (13-4)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Cardinals are unbeaten at 8-0 since returning back from South Carolina a couple of weeks ago. I’ve been real impressed with the way this team has been playing. They are also the only team unbeaten (7-0) against 13th Region teams.

Surprise, surprise: James Burns’ squad has been hitting the ball well during its eight-game win streak. I was really impressed with South Laurel’s 12-1 win over Pulaski County. Only two other teams in the state have scored 12 runs against the Lady Maroons this season — North Laurel and Lafayette.

2. North Laurel Lady Jaguars (12-8)

What’s the scoop: No doubt about it, things aren’t going well right now for the Lady Jaguars. Many, including myself, expected North Laurel to really shine this season, but the Lady Jaguars have struggled.

Surprise, surprise: A seven-game win streak earlier in the season has been forgotten after seeing North Laurel going 2-3 during its past five games, which includes a 15-4 loss to Louisville Male and Tuesday’s 6-4 defeat to cross-town rival South Laurel.

The best of the rest ...

3. (tie) Corbin Lady Redhounds (11-9)

What’s the scoop: I’m keeping Corbin at the No. 3 spot, but the Lady Redhounds have dropped three in a row, including a 3-2 loss to Clay County. Their Achilles’ heel is their defensive play. Corbin has got to cut down on errors if it wants to contend for the 13th Region crown.

3. (tie) Clay County Lady Tigers (10-4)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Tigers are on a roll after starting the season 4-4. They are winners of six straight and continue to be a dangerous team.

5. Middlesboro Lady Yellow Jackets (12-3)

What’s the scoop: Continue to keep an eye out on the Lady Yellow Jackets. They have the potential to surprise some teams.

Boys Top 5

1. South Laurel Cardinals (15-3)

What’s the scoop: The defending 13th Region champions continue to show they’re going to be tough to beat this season by sweeping 50th District competition with a perfect 6-0 record. The Cardinals’ pitching staff has been dominating lately — allowing only 10 runs during their last eight games.

Surprise, surprise: South Laurel has put together an impressive eight-game win streak, which includes two wins over Corbin, a 9-1 victory over Harlan County and an 11-5 decision over Somerset.

2. Clay County Tigers (13-7)

What’s the scoop: The Tigers are quietly sitting still at the No. 2 spot. This team could surprise once post-season play begins.

Surprise, surprise: Let’s not forget Clay County remains the lone team from the region to beat South Laurel this season.

The best of the rest ...

3.  North Laurel Jaguars (12-8)

What’s the scoop: A four-game winning streak has North Laurel on the move. Keep an eye out on the Jaguars as well.

4. Harlan County Black Bears (18-7)

What’s the scoop: The Black Bears move up a spot after winning their past three games pretty easy.

5. Corbin Redhounds (11-10)

What’s the scoop: The Redhounds have been struggling of late. They’ve lost four games in a row.
