There are a lot of things I need to ramble about

CORBIN — Most would believe with the high school sports’ seasons coming to an end last week that there isn’t much to talk about with summer here.

Well, they’re wrong and you guys know me, I always have something to ramble about and, yes, I do have some things to ramble about, so here we go.

Corbin’s girls basketball head coach vacancy

With Jennifer Parsons no longer coach of the Lady Redhound basketball program, who Corbin is going to hire is going to be pretty interesting.

Why?

Because whoever gets the job will be taking over a team that won the 13th Region championship this past season and most of the talent is returning. Corbin will have to find replacements for both Holli Disney and Kristen Fothergill, but the Lady Redhounds still return a lot of talent and have a great chance of repeating as region champs.

But of course the big question is — who is going to be the next coach?

I talked to Corbin athletic director Thom Smith Thursday and he did say there has been interest shown since the position came open.

“This is my first major position that has been open since being named athletic director,” he said. “We have had several show interest within the district and out of the area, too. We’ve also had one from out of state.”

Smith said he is going to give anyone who is interested ample time to respond and hopes to get things moving forward by mid-July.

“That’s when we will be pretty active,” he said.

Lady Colonels are looking good

Whitley County coach Donnie Jones seems to have his Lady Colonels on a roll this summer. Whitley County picked up a big win Thursday against one of the top teams entering the 2013-14 season — the Bell County Lady Bobcats.

The Lady Bobcats entered Thursday’s match-up with Whitley County with a 14-0 record after picking up wins over Harlan County (50-29), South Laurel (39-20), Barbourville (54-34) and the Lady Colonels on June 4, 55-34.

But Whitley County returned the favor Thursday by handing Bell County its first loss of the summer, winning, 65-51.

The 13th Region is going to be fun on the girls’ side of things during the upcoming season with teams such as Bell County, Corbin, Whitley County and Clay County dueling it out on the hard wood.

What’s going on at Knox Central and Lynn Camp?

With Clyde Dixon retiring a few weeks ago, Lynn Camp is searching for a new boys head basketball coach and from what I understand on the Knox County Public Schools’ Websites there are multiple head coaches positions open along with assistant coaches positions, too.

But that’s not all.

It also states that two athletic director positions are open as well.

It looks as if it’s going to be a busy summer for the Knox County school system.

• All Star season is almost here

Yep, All Star softball and baseball Minor and Little League action is set to begin June 22 in respective areas across the Tri-County.

North Laurel will host the Little League girls 11-12 year-old District and State Tournaments along with the girls Junior League District and the girls 9-10 year-old District Tournament.

On the boys’ side, Williamsburg will host the Area 3 11-12 year-old Tournament along with the 9-10 Area 1 Tournament.

Corbin will host the 11-12 Area 2 Tournament while South London will host the Area 2 Tournament. It should be a fun month ahead if you’re a fan of Little League baseball and softball.

The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
To be honest, it’s been used way too much for a long time and I’m just as guilty as the next guy.
