LYNN CAMP — Two of the top teams in the 13th Region squared off Friday as the Corbin Lady Redhounds and Lynn Camp Lady Cats met for the first time this season, but only one of them showed up in the game’s early stages.

Jason McDaniel’s squad jumped out to a 21-4 lead by the end of the first quarter as Lynn Camp shot just 1-for-10 from the floor in the opening period.

Despite the early lead the Lady Redhounds had to fight off a late rally by Lynn Camp, who trimmed the lead to three points with 2:15 to play in the game, to earn a 53-47 victory.

After the game McDaniel gave credit to Lynn Camp for their effort, but also pointed out that he was proud of the way his team battled late in the game.

“I want to give coach (Richard) Jones and Lynn Camp a lot of credit because they have a really nice ball club,” McDaniel said. “They’ve got good size, they’re hard to speed up and they take care of the basketball.

“We were able to knock a few shots in early and got some momentum early and I thought we played a pretty good game,” he added. “They (Lynn Camp) deserve a lot of credit for the way they battled back and they’re going to be a tough team down the road when postseason rolls around.”

As for Lynn Camp’s early shooting woes, Jones said he explained to his team after the game that the slow first quarter is the kind of start that’s hard to recover from against any team.

“You just can’t fall behind 21-4 and expect to win, especially against a team as good as Corbin,” Jones said. “We were able to get settled in and we made a good run in the third quarter and I’m proud of the way our kids didn’t quit and kept fighting back.

“We’ve got to be able to put four quarters of basketball together if we want to beat teams like this and that’s what I told our kids,” he added. “This was a good game for us though and we’ll get back to work and try to improve on the things we need to improve on.”

After falling behind (21-4) at the end of the first quarter, Lynn Camp was able to outscore the Lady Redhounds 14-10 in the second period to trim the gap to 31-18.

The Lady Cats’ Heather Wilson scored nine of her team-high 16 points in the third quarter as Lynn Camp used a 15-6 run to cut the gap to 37-33 with eight minutes to play in the contest.

Corbin pushed the lead to as much as nine in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Cats got consecutive baskets from Breanna White, Brooklyn Bryant and Wilson to cut the gap to 48-45. Kayla Wilson scored the last five points of the game for Corbin to help give the Lady Redhounds the 53-47 win.
