LIKE IT OR NOT: It's been a very busy summer

CORBIN — While a lot of people would expect the local sports scene to slow down in the Tri-County in the summer time, that’s not usually the case for us here at the Times-Tribune.

With more Little League All-Star teams than you can shake a stick and coaching changes at the high school level coming at us like wildfire, it’s no wonder we’ve stayed busy lately. Given that constant whirlwind, there hasn’t been a lot of time or space for me to write an editorial. With that said, I’ll try to get as much out of my head as I can in the space allowed.

Little League All Stars

With the Little League All-Star season about to wind down locally, the Tri-County has been well represented this season. If the results of this year’s teams are any indication, the future of our high school fastpitch and baseball teams is very bright.

The North Laurel 9-10 year-old All Stars brought home a state championship and will head to Indianapolis, Indiana to play in the Central Region Tournament.

Knox County is sending a team of 11-year-olds to the state tournament, while Corbin’s 12-year-old All Stars (the level you will eventually see on ESPN and ABC in the Little League World Series) will also head to Bowling Green this weekend to play in the state tournament.

I’ve been able to watch a lot of Little League baseball over the course of the past eight years and I have to say that Corbin’s 12-year-old squad is one of the best overall teams I have seen in quite a while. I would rank them right up there with the Knox County team that made a run to last year’s regional tournament after winning the state title.

The team is solid up and down the lineup and has an impressive group of pitchers on hand to take the baseball when need be. The only question I have is whether or not the team will be able to play well away from home. Corbin has had the benefit of playing every game of the area and district tournaments at its home field. I think when you’re playing good baseball it really doesn’t matter where you are playing. Corbin is playing good baseball right now and I look for them to continue to do so.

  • 0729 KNOX FBALL FOR WEB.tif Must-See Football

It’s never too early to talk about what games will be the big ones for the Tri-County high school football fans to watch this upcoming season. I’ve tried to narrow my list down to 10 games, but honestly, it really wasn’t easy to do — but I did manage to do it.
Let’s just say things should be very entertaining, and interesting, for you the fan this season.

  • Shelton was a hero by any definition

The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
To be honest, it’s been used way too much for a long time and I’m just as guilty as the next guy.
