SOUTH LAUREL — It looked as though the Whitley County Lady Colonels and South Laurel Lady Cardinals were in for a barn burner in the early going Tuesday, but Larry Anderson's squad put an end to that notion in a hurry.

After leading 14-12 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Colonels outscored their opponent 53-32 the rest of the way en route to the 67-44 win.

Brandi Smith led the Lady Colonels with 20 points, while Taylor Arthur paced South Laurel with 23 points to lead all scorers.

The victory moves Whitley County to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in district play.

After the win, Anderson said he was pleased with the way his team was able to recover after seeing an unusual defense thrown at them in the first quarter.

“They threw some things at us we hadn’t seen in that little 2-2-1 half court defense,” he said. “We hadn’t seen that before and we definitely hadn’t worked on it any at all, so the girls were a little confused by it.

“We have some really good guards though and they’re able to make the kind of adjustments they need to make,” he added. “I was pleased once we were able to settle in with the way we executed as a team.”

As for that defense Anderson spoke of, after the game South Laurel head coach Konnie Snyder had a different opinion about it.

“What defense?” Snyder asked. “We really didn’t play any defense tonight.

“I was not at all pleased with our effort,” she added. “We were outplayed and that’s about it.”

After taking the 14-12 lead into the second quarter, Whitley County used a 9-2 run to push the gap to 23-14 to start the period. By the time halftime rolled around, the Lady Colonels held a 32-22 edge.

Things didn't get much better for the Lady Cardinals in the third quarter as they connected on just 2-of-13 shot attempts in the period as they saw the deficit climb to 46-28 with eight minutes to play in the game.

Whitley County continued to pull away as time wound down, cruising to the 67-44 win.
