LYNN CAMP — The Lynn Camp Lady Wildcats got a jump-start on district play Friday, knocking off the Knox Central Lady Panthers at home, 52-39.

Kayla Smith led the way for Lynn Camp, tallying 18 points in the win, giving the Lady Wildcats their first win over Knox Central since Feb. 22, 2010, when they knocked them out of the 51st District Tournament.

After a disappointing effort earlier in the week during the Lady Wildcats’ season opener, assistant coach Mike Hensley said the staff was pleased with the effort and hustle the team showed.

“We came out and played good defense and actually played the way we thought we could play,” Hensley said. “We did a good job against them offensively as well.

“Our kids were a lot more deliberate and executed our offense a lot better than we did the other night,” he added. “I think it’s important to be patient with the style of offense we play and our girls showed that tonight.”

It looked as though Knox Central was poised to take control in the early going after jumping out to a 9-0 lead. After a Lynn Camp timeout, the Lady Wildcats responded with a 9-0 run of its own, eventually taking a 12-9 lead after the first quarter of play.

Knox Central managed to settle things down to start the second quarter, trimming the gap to 15-14 before Lynn Camp was able to get back on track. The Lady Wildcats closed the half with a 7-1 run to lead 22-15 at halftime.

The Lady Wildcats continued to be patient on offense, pushing the lead to 37-21 at the end of the third quarter, thanks to another quarter-ending run, this time a 7-0 spurt.

Knox Central used a 10-4 run to trim the margin to 10 points (41-31), but the Lady Wildcats rallied to stop the momentum before eventually taking the 52-39 win.

The win sends Lynn Camp to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in district play, while the Lady Panthers’ record also moves to 1-1, 0-1 in district play.

“This was a really good win for us for a few reasons,” Hensley said. “It was a district game and it was a rivalry game for us.

“I’m proud of the way the kids came out and showed that they could correct the mistakes we made in our first game.”
