North Laurel advances to District 4 Championship game with win over Clay

MIDDLESBORO — After dropping a 9-0 decision to Hazard/Perry during the finals of the winner's bracket on Saturday, the North Laurel 9-10 year-old All-Stars responded in a big way less than 24 hours later, upending Clay County in fine fashion with a 6-1 victory.

The win advances Chris Edwards' squad to today's title game at 7 p.m. against Hazard/Perry. If North Laurel wins today, the two teams will face-off in a winner takes all contest on Tuesday.

“This was a good bounce-back win for us,” Edwards said. “Our kids came in with a good attitude, and really played a good game. We had fantastic pitching today, and we played good defense. I don't believe we made an error.”

When asked if he likes his team’s chances of pulling the District 4 title off with back-to-back wins against Hazard/Perry, Edwards seemed confident.

“Sure, I like our chances,” he said. “They’ve got to beat us. That’s the way I'm looking at it.

“Don't get me wrong, they are a good team,” he added. “I thought we played an all-around game today. Good pitching and good defense wins games.”
