SOUTH LAUREL — The Whitley County Lady Colonels improved their record to 16-4, which is the most wins in the 13th Region, knocking off South Laurel, 63-33.

The win also improved Donnie Jones’ squad to 8-1 against regional opponents and 5-0 (3-0 in games that count toward seeding) in 50th District play.

The Lady Colonels continued to get solid play their seniors. Guard Brandi Smith led all scorers with a 22-point effort, while senior center Kandace Craig added 13 points in the game. Maria Johnson scored nine to close out the scoring by the senior group.

Taylor Dingess added 10, giving Whitley County three starters in double figures.

Jones said he was pleased with his team’s effort after the win, but admitted he felt like there is plenty for his team to work on as the regular season winds down.

“Our girls played well and this was a district game, so it was a good win,” Jones said. “I really like the way they are playing right now, but there are still plenty of things we can do to get better as a team.

“Hopefully we can keep playing well as the season comes to a close and carry some momentum in to the postseason,” he added. “We still have a few district games to play, but I like where we’re at as far as seeding right now.”

Whitley County took control early, doubling the Lady Cardinals’ offensive effort in the first quarter to grab a 22-11 lead at the end of the period. A 17-8 effort in the second quarter stretched the Lady Colonels’ lead to 39-19 as the first half came to a close.

South Laurel struggled offensively in the third period, but the Lady Colonels showed no signs of slowing down as they pushed the gap to 58-22 with eight minutes to play in the game.

The Lady Cardinals got the best of Whitley County in the fourth quarter, using an 11-5 effort to cut in to the lead, but it was too little too late as Whitley County cruised to the 63-33 victory.
