Lady Cards knock off Williamsburg, 56-45, Corbin, KY

CORBIN — By Dan Connell / Staff Writer

WILLIAMSBURG — Williamsburg entered Monday's contest coming off a win over Jellico on Saturday, while South Laurel was looking to snap a three-game losing streak.

Despite a valiant effort by Williamsburg, South Laurel came away with the 56-45 victory, improving to 5-12 on the season.

The win also gives South Laurel its first district win this season. Lady Cardinal Coach Konnie Snyder commented on the win against Williamsburg.

“It was a tough battle," Snyder said. “Williamsburg shot the ball pretty well and they just stayed after it the entire night.

“We would get a little bit of a lead and here they come right back at us,” she added. “It was a tough battle, but all district games are.”

South Laurel opened play to a 10-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Morgan Madden and Bailey Miller jump-started the South Laurel offense by connecting on one three-point basket each, but the Lady Jacket defense forced several missed shots, creating scoring opportunities from Kaci Brown and Haley Harris.

Brown scored the first five of seven Williamsburg points of the game and Harris connected twice from three-point range in the second quarter. South Laurel's 25-12 lead disappeared when Williamsburg went on a 5-0 run at the end of the second period on a Harris three-point basket and a Lexi Boggs layup, cutting the lead to 25-17 at halftime.

South Laurel pulled away late as the Lady Yellow Jackets struggled from the free-throw line.

“We missed some free throws tonight,” Williamsburg coach Andrea Ellis said. “We shot 48 percent from the free throw line, which is obviously not good. We played hard, but just missed some free throws.”
