LINCOLN COUNTY — After taking a 40-26 lead into halftime, the Whitley County Lady Colonels fell in overtime to the Lincoln County Patriots 74-72.
The Lady Colonels struggled to score in the second half, hitting only eight field goals in the final two quarters. Despite a strong showing in the overtime period, the Lady Patriots knocked down eight-of-12 from the free throw line to seal the victory.
“We had our chances in the end, but we just didn’t make the plays we needed to make,” said Whitley County Coach Donnie Jones. “We knew they’d come out hard in the second half and we didn’t respond. We dug ourselves a hole and fought back, but wasn’t able to win the game.”
It was the inside game of Lincoln County that got the best of the Lady Colonels. Forward Spencer Sims and center Tiandra Hocker combined for 49 of the Lady Patriots’ 74 points.
“We’re not tough physically. We’ll have to toughen up. Teams are being physical with us and we’re backing down from that right now,” said Jones. “They got really good play on the inside tonight. They have one of the most athletic post players we have seen this year.”
Despite the loss, the Lady Colonels had a great shooting night, knocking down nine three-point shots in the game. Jones was pleased with the shooting, but said his team will need more to beat good teams.
“We shot the ball well in the first half. We can’t depend on that, though. It’s good, but it can only carry you so far,” Jones said. “In the second half, we gave up 50-some points. We’ve been harping on that in practice. We’ve not played well in transition defense, not been getting back. We gave up too many layups tonight and that is what hurt us.”
