NORTH LAUREL — The North Laurel Jaguars recovered from a weekend loss to Jackson County by knocking off Pineville, 59-57, Monday.

The win pushed Brad Sizemore’s squad back above .500 (13-12 overall and 6-6 against 13th Region competition) with just five games to play in the regular season.

The game was the fifth in 10 days for the Jaguars, which could explain what Sizemore called a fatigued effort from his squad.

“We’re a little mentally and physically fatigued from this weekend,” Sizemore said. “I have to give Pineville a lot of credit because they shot the ball really well.

“I’m proud of our guys for gutting it out tonight,” he added.

North Laurel jumped out to a 21-12 lead in the first quarter, thanks to a 12-point showing by Peyton Broughton in the game’s first eight minutes. Broughton finished the game with 24 points, leading all scorers and was the only Jaguar player to reach double figures.

Pineville trimmed the gap by three points in the second quarter, outscoring the Jaguars 15-12, but still trailed, 33-27, at halftime.

The Mountain Lions came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, using a 17-point effort to cut the gap to 46-44 with eight minutes to play in the game.

The Jaguars didn’t exactly close the game out strong as the two teams played even in the final period, but Sizemore’s squad held on for the 59-57 victory.

Donald Collett led Pineville with 18 points, while Tony Hoskins added 14 and Conner Ford chipped in 11.

North Laurel will be back in action today when the Jaguars travel to Clay County to face the defending 13th Region champion Tigers at 7:30 p.m.
