LONDON — There’s a buzz in the air around the North Laurel Little League Complex this week and it comes with good reason.

North Laurel Little League is hosting the 2013 Kentucky Little League State Fastpitch Tournament, which is scheduled to get underway this evening at 6 p.m.

In addition to being the host team, North Laurel will also have a team vying for a state title as their 9-10-year-old team gets things underway in opening round action.

After the opening ceremonies Sunday evening, North Laurel Little League President John Allen said that even though hosting the event is a tall order, he considered it a privilege to be the host of this year’s tournament.

“We have a very rich softball tradition here at North Laurel from Little League all the way up into the high school level, so we consider it an honor to host this,” Allen said. “It’s a lot of hard work, but we have a very dedicated group of volunteers who are always willing to pitch in a helping hand to get things done.”

In addition to North Laurel’s Minor League team taking part in the tournament, Clay County, who represents District 4 in the Little League division, will be in action Monday as well.

Allen said that his organization would support Clay County as they represent the local district in the state tournament.

“We have our girls' 9-10-year-old team in this thing, but we also have the team that won our district, which is Clay County,” he added. “We always like to support the local teams and Clay County really battled to get to this point and they had to beat some really good teams.

“It should be an exciting week of softball and we invite all of the local communities to come out and support these kids,” he added.
