SOUTH LAUREL — In their last home game of the year, the South Laurel Lady Cardinals sent their seniors off with a win over the visiting Rockcastle Lady Rockets, 46-40, on Friday.

The Lady Cardinals only had four players score in the game but was led by their senior center Taylor Arthur with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Fellow seniors Emily Clonce and Cassandra Johnson added 13 and nine points, respectively.

“We needed to play well tonight and it was a good win for us,” said South Laurel Coach Konnie Snyder. “I thought our seniors came out and played very, very well. A lot of the times the emotions of a night like this hurt you, but I didn’t think they did tonight.”

The game was back-and-forth throughout the first half. South Laure took a 12-6 lead after the first quarter, but Rockcastle tied the game up 17-17 heading into halftime.

“We came out good to start the game, but we kind of lost the intensity at one time,” said Snyder. “We came in at the half to try to regroup and think a little bit, and we came out much better in the second half.”

The Lady Cardinals took control of the game in the third quarter, dominating on both ends of the court. South Laurel held the Lady Rockets to just three field goals in the quarter, while outscoring Rockcastle 16-6.

The Lady Rockets did their best to make a comeback in the final period, pressuring the Lady Cardinals with their full court defense. Despite the lead being cut to six, with just two minutes left in the game, South Laurel was able to knock down nine-of-13 from the charity stripe to seal the victory, 46-40.

“I thought we did a really good job against their press tonight, and took care of the basketball,” Snyder said. “We were able to make our free throws there toward the end, when we needed to.”

The win brings the South Laurel record to 12-13 on the season. They will take on the Whitley County Lady Colonels on Tuesday night in the first round of the 50th District Tournament. The Lady Cardinals split games with Whitley County during the regular season.
