BARBOURVILLE — If Saturday’s 61-46 road win over Barbourville is any indication of things to come, the South Laurel Lady Cardinals could make some noise once postseason play begins Feb. 18.
The Lady Cardinals, who lost 58-54 at home earlier in the season to the Lady Tigers, limited Barbourville to 0-for-eight shooting from three-point range and 14-of-45 shooting from the floor overall while senior Taylor Arthur scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds during the 15-point win.
“We played a lot better,” South Laurel coach Konnie Snyder said. “Not only did our starters play better, but I thought our bench played very well tonight.
“We played a lot of people and we had a lot of people contribute and I like that.”
Eight different players scored for South Laurel (12-12), as the Lady Cardinals shot a red-hot 25-of-46 from the floor while outrebounding the Lady Tigers (17-10), 35-26.
“We’ve had some tough games,” Snyder said. “We’ve played some good teams and I hope that sharpens some things a little bit and allow us to handle some different situations.
“I thought our perimeter play was a whole lot better,” she added. “We’ve played a lot of teams that shoot from the perimeter and hopefully we have learned from those situations.”
The Lady Cardinals led 15-10 at the end of the first quarter after limiting Barbourville to only four-of-16 shooting from the floor and things got even better for South Laurel in the second frame.
A layup by Arthur early in the quarter ignited a 14-2 run that saw the Lady Cardinals’ lead grow to 29-14. The Lady Tigers managed to go on a 7-4 run to close out the first half while cutting their deficit to 33-21.
Snyder’s squad built a 20-point edge (45-25) in the third quarter after a basket by Cassandra Johnson and withstood a 10-0 run by the Lady Tigers by closing out the period with a 4-0 run.
South Laurel put the game away during the final eight minutes by limiting Barbourville to one-of-14 shooting from the floor.
Johnson also scored in double figures for the Lady Cardinals, finishing with 15 points and seven rebounds while Kara Erslan led the Lady Tigers with 12 points.
