Barbourville picks up 80-70 win over Jellico, Tenn.

BARBOURVILLE — Coming into Thursday’s game against Jellico, Tenn., the Barbourville Tigers had not won a game since Jan. 15 and were 0-4 during that stretch.

Having beaten the Blue Devils by 52 points the first time the two played this season, Barbourville welcomed Thursday’s opponent to town, coming away with an 80-70 to improve to 13-10 on the season.

Alexander Phipps led the way with 22 points for the Tigers, connecting on 6-of-15 shot attempts, four of which were from three-point range. Devon Mills added 21 for the Tigers on a 7-for-17 effort from the floor, two from three-point land.

Barbourville jumped out to a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and was able to push the gap to 37-28 by the time halftime rolled around.

The Tigers pushed the pace in the third period, outscoring Jellico 24-14 to extend the lead to 61-42 as the fourth quarter got underway.

The Blue Devils closed the gap in the fourth period on a 28-19 effort, but it wasn’t enough to make up the difference as Barbourville came away with the 80-70 win.
