Maguet comes through in the clutch

Kaleb Maguet knocks down shot at the buzzer to give Corbin win over Bell

LOG MOUNTAIN — Tony Pietrowski’s Corbin Redhounds found themselves in another battle just days after falling in double overtime to South Laurel.

But this time around, Corbin got the win, as Kaleb Maguet knocked down a last-second shot to give the Redhounds a 59-57 win over a much-improved Bell County squad Thursday.

“Kaleb always puts his team first and I’m very excited that he hit the game winner and is getting some much deserved praise,” Pietrowski said.

“I’m proud of the way we responded on the road after the emotional game Tuesday,” he added. “I felt like we controlled the game for three quarters and then battled through adversity at the end to get the win,” he added. “A lot of kids were asked to play different roles due to Zach Farley being out with injury and responded well. Hunter Grubb continues to make big plays for us in key situations.”

Grubb led the way for Corbin with 16 points in the win while Robbie Igo added 14. Bell County’s Tyler Potter led all scorers with 14 points.

The Bobcats jumped on Corbin early with a 10-2 lead, which had Pietrowski concerned.

“In the back of your mind, you wonder if we were still feeling the effect physically and mentally from all the effort we expended Tuesday night.”

The Redhounds responded and led 27-25 at halftime and 45-35 at the end of the third quarter.

But Bell County rallied and made a game of it by outscoring the Redhounds 22-12 with less than a minute remaining and found themselves tied at 57 apiece before Maguet came through with the game-winning shot. Corbin will be back in action today against Pineville.

“There is no time to celebrate, though,” Pietrowski said. “We have to get back at the grind tomorrow.”
