WHITLEY COUNTY — The South Laurel Lady Cardinals came into Friday’s 50th District showdown with Whitley County needing a win to improve their position on the district standings.
When all was said and done, the Lady Cardinals’ Taylor Arthur was able to take advantage of the absence of the Lady Colonels’ key post player in Kandice Craig, tallying 27 points while pulling down 16 rebounds to pace her team to a 54-48 win.
After the game, South Laurel coach Konnie Snyder said she was proud of her team’s effort and called it a “big win.”
“This is a big win for us, but I thought we played better in the first half than we did in the second half,” Snyder said. “I thought Whitley County played better in the second half and we were really kind of able to hang on in the end.”
As for the Lady Colonels, head coach Larry Anderson said he was proud of the way his team battled, but said in the end the Lady Colonels didn’t play good enough to win the game.
“They just outplayed us,” Anderson said. “We didn’t play well and we didn’t take advantage of some things.
“We weren’t able to knock down the shots that we usually knock down and I thought we got frustrated, so I wasn’t happy with that,” he added. “We didn’t really have an answer for Arthur and she controlled the game inside and they did a good job of getting the ball to her.”
South Laurel held a slim 7-6 lead after the first quarter and extended the margin to 20-14 as halftime rolled around.
The Lady Colonels trimmed the margin to five points thanks to a 20-17 third-quarter effort to make the score 37-32 with eight minutes to play in the game.
The Lady Cardinals could have put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, but they only made good on three-of-10 free throws, leaving the door open for a potential Lady Colonels’ rally.
It was not to be as Whitley County failed to make up any ground as they were outscored 17-16 in the period.
With the win, South Laurel improves to 9-10 on the season and 2-4 in district play. Whitley County falls to 12-5 on the season and 2-1 in 50th District play.
