MERCER COUNTY — After knocking off Seneca Thursday afternoon by a score of 72-49, the Whitley County Lady Colonels are 1-1 in Mercer County’s Titans Christmas Clash.

The loss came Wednesday evening as the Lady Colonels dropped a 47-44 decision to Sacred Heart, who came into the contest at 10-0 on the season.

“This was a really good team, but I was happy with the way we competed with them,” Whitley County head coach Larry Anderson said. “We didn’t play as well as we could have to start the game and we really didn’t get off the bus it seemed like until the third quarter.

“I thought we did a good job a few times when we could’ve gotten down,” he added. “Our kids fought to the end and that’s all you can ask of them.”

The loss was the second of the season for the Lady Colonels, who are 10-2 after the second day of play at Mercer County.

In Wednesday’s game Whitley County fell behind early as the Lady Valkyries grabbed a 19-9 lead at the end of the first quarter of play.

Anderson’s squad cut into the deficit by outscoring Sacred Heart 11-8 in the second quarter, but still trailed 27-20 at halftime.

The see-saw battle of quarter-scoring continued when the Lady Valkyries used an 11-7 third to push the gap back to 11 points, holding a 38-27 lead to start the fourth quarter.

Brandi Smith led the Lady Colonels in scoring in both games, chipping in 22 against Seneca, while tallying 18 against Sacred Heart. Maria Johnson added 16 in the win over Seneca.
