W'burg advances to district tourney after 12-2 win

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg 9-10-year-old All Stars may have had their backs against the wall Monday night against Middlesboro, but you couldn’t tell by the way they played.

Williamsburg came out firing on all cylinders as it came away with a 12-2 win in four innings thanks to a stellar effort from the top of the lineup, which was paced by Sydney Bowen.

Bowen was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a pair of doubles and three runs scored, while Bobby Zecchini and Aiden Bennet each chipped in 2-for-3 showings. Combined, the trio went 7-for-9 at the plate with a base on balls and eight of the team’s 12 runs scored.

Williamsburg coach Brant Poore said he knew that if his team were to be successful, it would take the kind of effort that his one through three batters turned in.

“The top of our lineup hit the ball really well and did what we asked in getting on base a lot,” Poore said. “Our number three batter, Sydney Bowen, was perfect at the plate and really provided us with some big hits and scored some key runs.

“We wanted to come out and play aggressive from the start and that’s what we told our kids,” he added. “The win means we get to move on to the district tournament and that’s all you look for out of this right now.”

Williamsburg fell behind in the first inning when Middlesboro plated a run, but Evan Poore was able to pitch himself out of a jam. Poore sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a pop-up to limit the damage after loading the bases with no outs in the inning, but his team trailed, 1-0.

Williamsburg responded in the bottom of the first when Zecchini, Bennett and Bowen rattled off three straight singles to start the inning. The trio came around to score in the inning to give Williamsburg a 3-1 lead.

The offense didn’t slow down there for Williamsburg as it rallied for five more runs in the bottom of the second inning to stretch the lead to 8-1.

Four more runs in the third extended the gap to 12-1. Middlesboro plated a run in the top of the fourth to trim the lead to 12-2, but it wasn’t enough to stop the mercy rule from being put in effect to end the game.
