WHITLEY COUNTY — First-year coach Jarrod Earnest said he’s not only excited about taking over the Whitley County Colonels’ soccer team, but also about the potential of this year’s squad.

Earnest, who coached Whitley County’s middle school team last season, is not entirely new to the program. He said he was able to see several games last season, which combined with the fact he coached some of the incoming freshman last year, he’s got an idea of what the team is capable of.

As for what he expects out of his players, Earnest said he’s not much different than any other coach who wants their team to succeed.

“I expect hard work and I expect the kids to come out, especially in the preseason, and give a good effort toward getting in shape,” Earnest said. “I’ve always said that if my squad isn’t the most technically savvy team, we will certainly be the most in-shape team.

“I feel like if we work hard and come out in shape and ready to play, we can compete with a lot of the teams we face,” he added. “We may not blow any of them away, but if we do what we’re supposed to do, we should be competitive in our region.”
