Corbin looks for repeat of 2012

CORBIN —

By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

CORBIN — Coming off a season that saw the Corbin Lady Redhounds make a trip to the state volleyball tournament, head coach Liberty Roberts said she expects big things out of her team.

Roberts’ squad brought home a 13th Region Championship thanks to a grueling five-set win over South Laurel that saw the Lady Redhounds fall behind 2-0 in the early stages.

Roberts said that experience, as well as the season as a whole, will hopefully give her team the motivation it needs to repeat in 2013.

“We had a really good season last year and that’s something we’re all proud of,” Roberts said. “I think our girls matured a lot over the course of the season and it showed once we got into the postseason.

“We lost a few key seniors off last year’s squad, but we have some girls that are ready to step in and make their own way,” she added. “I feel like if we can get off to a good start we could do some big things this season.”

A tentative schedule on the team’s KHSAA webpage shows the Lady Redhounds opening the season on the road before heading to Pikeville for the Champions of the Mountains Tournament. Roberts said the tournament was made up of mountain teams that were either region champions or runners up in their respective region last season.

The tournament is just one of several ways Roberts has beefed up the schedule a bit to help make her team better prepared for the kind of teams that are commonly faced in state tournament play.

“We wanted to make our schedule a little bit tougher this season because that’s really the only way you can improve as a team,” Roberts said. “You can stack up a bunch of wins, but in the end if you haven’t faced quality opponents, you haven’t improved any over the course of the season.

“Hopefully we can get out and see some better quality teams and let our girls get a feel of the kind of competition they’ll be facing if we should make another trip to the state tournament,” she added. “We’ll also play in Whitley County’s tournament, which was a great tournament last season, and we expect to see some good quality opponents in that as well.”
