Late Struggles

Clay County tops Corbin, 4-3, with last-inning rally

CORBIN — By Les Dixon / Staff Writer

CLAY COUNTY — The Corbin Lady Redhounds fell behind 3-0, but put up a valiant effort, tying the game at three apiece in the fifth inning before falling to Clay County Thursday, 4-3.

Corbin (9-14) defeated the Lady Tigers three weeks ago, 11-1, but this was a different Clay County team they faced this time around.

Jamie Gilbert’s squad was playing in front of their home crowd for the first time this season, and they managed to give them something to cheer about while improving to 11-3 in the process.

Despite the loss, Corbin coach Chris Hart was pleased with the way his team fought back.

“You have to give Leslie Roberts credit,” Hart said of the Clay County pitcher. “She did a fantastic job on the mound. We just did not hit the ball effectively tonight. We couldn’t put together any timely hits at all.”

The Lady Redhounds finished the game with only five hits, and was led by Hannah Hart’s 2-for-3 effort while Whitley Gatliff, Megan Greene and Harleigh Grubb each collected a hit in the loss.

“The good thing is that we fought back, and didn’t give up,” Hart said. “We did come out a little flat, but we got back in to the game.”

Hart’s squad will try to get back on track today with a 50th District match-up with Williamsburg.

“We need to go out there and get a win,” Hart said. “We need to bounce back, and if we can get a win, it will assure us from not getting the No. 4 seed, and keep us in the hunt for the No. 1 seed.”
