Fear 'Les' Diamond Rankings

CORBIN — Fear ‘Les’ Softball Diamond Rankings

No. 1 North Laurel (10-5 overall, 5-0 against 13th Region competition) — The Lady Jaguars looked like they were beginning to put some big wins together after defeating South Laurel, but losses to both Woodford County and Shelby County, a team the Lady Cardinals have beaten, slowed down things a bit for Kyle Mink’s squad.

No. 2 South Laurel (16-2, 6-1) — The Lady Cardinals have recovered nicely after a loss to North Laurel by defeating Johnson Central, South Oldham and Whitley County.

No. 3 Corbin (5-11, 4-1) — The Lady Redhounds turned in two of their better efforts during their stay in Florida, and don’t be surprised to see them start putting things together now.

No. 4 Middlesboro (7-2, 7-1) — The Lady Yellow Jackets survived a scare against Harlan, but remain a dangerous team.

No. 5 Clay County (7-2, 5-2) — I’ve said this once, and I’ll say it again, the Lady Tigers need to play a tougher schedule.

No. 6 Harlan County (8-4, 5-1) — Eighth-grader Destinee Jenkins has the Lady Black Bears rolling right now.

No. 7 Pineville (4-3, 3-3) — The Lady Mountain Lions are quietly putting together a nice season.

No. 8 Jackson County (3-8, 2-4) — The Lady Generals are a hard team to gauge.

No. 9 Barbourville (2-6, 2-4) — Welcome to the top 10 Barbourville. Brandon Simpson’s squad looks like they’re beginning to hit stride.

No. 10 Knox Central (4-11, 4-7) — The Lady Panthers have really been inconsistent this season.

Fear ‘Les’ Baseball Diamond Rankings

No. 1 South Laurel (12-2, 6-0) — The Cardinals suffered their first in-state loss this past week, but remain unbeaten against 13th Region teams, and defeated defending 13th Region champion North Laurel this past week.

No. 2 North Laurel (11-6, 5-2) — Even though the Jaguars lost to South Laurel, North Laurel has shown it has a solid chance to repeat as 13th Region champions.

No. 3 Harlan County (11-5, 6-2) — Connor Leisge makes the Black Bears a very dangerous team.

No. 4 Whitley County (11-5, 4-1) — The Colonels hung tough with South Laurel before losing, 4-1, but keep an eye on this team, they are good.

No. 5 Corbin (4-7, 3-2) — The Redhounds’ record isn’t the greatest right now, but this team is very good and will be ready once post-season begins.

No. 6 Clay County (7-11, 4-4) — The Tigers took some lumps early, but look to be playing some of  their best baseball right now.

No. 7 Bell County (10-6, 6-6) — The Bobcats are the most-improved team in the 13th Region.

No. 8 Knox Central (7-8, 3-4) — The Panthers have been very inconsistent. They are talented, but just can’t seem to get on a roll.

No. 9 Harlan (8-7, 3-5) — The Green Dragons are another team that has improved from last season.

No. 10 Barbourville (3-4, 2-4) — The Tigers picked up a big win over Jackson County this past week.

  • THE WAY IT IS: Football is in the air in the Tri-County

These cool summer days are reminding me of the cool football Friday nights of September and October, and with that said, these cooler temperatures have me in the mood of writing about things to come for our local football teams in the Tri-County.

It’s never too early to talk about what games will be the big ones for the Tri-County high school football fans to watch this upcoming season. I’ve tried to narrow my list down to 10 games, but honestly, it really wasn’t easy to do — but I did manage to do it.
Let’s just say things should be very entertaining, and interesting, for you the fan this season.

  • Shelton was a hero by any definition

The word hero is used a little too loosely for my taste these days.
To be honest, it’s been used way too much for a long time and I’m just as guilty as the next guy.
