MADISON SOUTHERN — Doing the little things sometimes (base running and bunting the ball) pays off and the Whitley County Colonels proved just that during their 5-4 win over Madison Southern Thursday.

The Colonels (10-6) fought back from a four-run deficit and finally took the lead in the seventh inning, as Casey Crisologo capped off a perfect 3-for-3 effort and eventually scored the game-winning run by stealing second while taking advantage of some small ball.

“We really kept fighting out there,” Whitley County coach Kyle Adams said. “Casey Crisologo went 3-for-3 and we moved him over and did what it took to get him in.

“Our seniors really helped us out tonight,” he added. “It was good to get a win.”

The Eagles scored four runs in the second inning and led 4-0 before seeing the Colonels chip away. Whitley County added runs in the third and fourth innings to make the score, 4-2, before tying the game at five apiece with two runs in the fifth inning.

Whitley County pitcher Alex Rose overcame a slow start on the mound and finished the game with eight strikeouts while allowing only three hits as the Colonels committed three errors in the win.

“He struggled a bit during the first two innings,” Adams said. “He calmed down after. There were times he could have quit out there with the defense letting him down, but he finished the game and did a good job.”

Casey Crisologo led the way with three hits and one RBI while Rose was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Michael Harris went 2-for-3 at the plate while Corey Crisologo drove in a run in the win.
