Fear ‘Les’ 13th Region Diamond Rankings, Corbin, KY

CORBIN — Girls Top 5

1. North Laurel Lady Jaguars (9-5)

What’s the scoop: The rest of the teams in the 13th Region need to watch out — the Lady Jaguars are beginning to hit stride. North Laurel has now won five games in a row while playing one of the toughest schedules in the Tri-County.

Surprise, surprise: The Lady Jaguars have outscored their opponents 43-3 during the five-game win streak and Farris Strong along with Kailin Yantz have played a big part in their team’s offensive success.

2. South Laurel Lady Cardinals (10-4)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Cardinals became the seventh team in state fastpitch history to win the program’s 500th games. South Laurel joins an elite group of teams — North Laurel (594 all-time wins), Christian County (573), Owensboro Catholic (566), Reidland (561), Greenwood (548), Allen County-Scottsville (505) and George Rogers Clark (500).

Surprise, surprise: The Lady Cardinals also own a five-game win streak, which has seen them outscore their opponents 45-3 during the process. South Laurel also captured the Lady Redhound Classic this past weekend.

The best of the rest ...

3. Corbin Lady Redhounds (11-6)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Redhounds hold firm at the No. 3 spot and could make some serious noise if they can pull off a win over South Laurel today on the road.

4. Clay County Lady Tigers (7-4)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Tigers picked up an impressive 10-7 win over Middlesboro to move up a spot. I’m telling you folks, the Clay County softball program is one to keep an eye on in the near future.

5. Middlesboro Lady Yellow Jackets (7-2)

What’s the scoop: The Lady Yellow Jackets saw their seven-game win streak come to an end after falling to Clay County at home 10-7. I’m impressed with the way Middlesboro has rebounded since opening the season with an 18-0 loss to South Laurel to begin the season.

Boys Top 5

1. South Laurel Cardinals (13-3)

What’s the scoop: The defending 13th Region champions are beginning to peak at the right time and look to be a pretty hard team to beat. South Laurel has now won six games in a row after going 1-2 during its spring break trip. The Cardinals have been red-hot hitting and pitching during the streak, scoring in doubles figures five times while shutting their opponents three times.

Surprise, surprise: South Laurel is a perfect 4-0 in 50th District play and can wrap-up the district’s top seed by winning splitting a pair of games with Corbin next week.

2. Clay County Tigers (11-7)

What’s the scoop: The Tigers’ record isn’t pretty, but they do have wins over both Corbin and South Laurel.

Surprise, surprise: I’ve got Clay County at the No. 2 spot despite seeing them go 4-5 during their last nine games.

The best of the rest ...

3. North Laurel Jaguars (9-8)

What’s the scoop: The Jaguars are 4-2 during their past six games, but still seem to be hit and miss at times this season.

4. Corbin Redhounds (11-6)

What’s the scoop: The Redhounds need to sweep South Laurel to keep their hopes of getting the 50th District’s top seed.

5. Harlan County Black Bears (16-7)

What’s the scoop: The Black Bears are a tough team to figure out.
