OWENSBORO — South Laurel senior pitcher Hagan Burns received some good news Wednesday when she found out she was named the 13th Region Coaches Association Player of the Year.
The senior right-hander, who has already signed to play softball for the University of the Cumberlands, turned in a stellar senior campaign for the 13th Region champion Lady Cardinals.
Despite missing close to three weeks of the regular season due to a shoulder injury, Burns still managed to lead the Tri-County with a 24-4 record, .51 ERA, 12 shut outs and 182 strikeouts. She also batted an impressive .447 on the season with 55 hits, three home runs and 46 RBI, which played a big role in South Laurel repeating as 13th Region champions along with an impressive 31-8 record.
“She is very deserving of the award and has had a great season for us,” South Laurel coach James Burns said. “She had a great year pitching and hitting for us. I’m really happy to see her be named as the 13th Region’s Player of the Year.”
Burns and her teammates will be in action tonight at Jack Fisher Park during first round action of the KHSAA State Fastpitch Tournament. South Laurel will face-off against 10th Region champion George Rogers Clark at 8 p.m.
