Williamsburg looks to continue quest for District Championship

CORBIN — By Les Dixon for the Times-Tribune

The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets hope to move one step closer to capturing another district championship, but to do so, they must find a way to knock off up-start Berea at home Friday.

The Pirates (2-5 overall, 0-1 in district play) are coming off a 34-26 upset victory over Lynn Camp during Week Seven action, and they hope to accomplish the same feat against Williamsburg. Their only other win is a 47-14 victory over Bracken County.

But first, Berea will have to find a way to contain the offensive trio of the Yellow Jackets in quarterback Dalton Sizemore and receivers Corey Shelton and Skyler Griffith.

Sizemore passed for more than 200 yards during last week's 47-0 win over Campbellsville, while both Shelton and Griffith returned punts for 60-yard touchdowns.

“We're ready, but we know we're going to have our hands full,” Williamsburg coach Jerry Herron said. “Berea had a big win last week, and they've got some momentum now. They're a team we can't take lightly.”

If the past four years are any indication of things to come Friday, Williamsburg shouldn't have any trouble improving to 5-2 overall, but more importantly a perfect 2-0 against district competition.

The Yellow Jackets are 4-0 against the Pirates dating back to 2009, including a 47-12 win last season. Williamsburg has outscored Berea, 167-68, during its four wins.

“We've had success against them, but they have played us close at times, too,” Herron said. “They won't lay down against us and we expect a very tough game.

“One of our goals is to be able to host a home playoff game and we'll get to do that if we win,” he added. “It will also get us one game closer to a district championship, but like I said, we've got to get past Berea first.”

The Pirates are coming off an eight-point win against Lynn Camp, and Herron expects them to try and slow things down Friday.

“They like to establish ball control and I'm sure they'll try to slow things down some against us,” he admitted. “They are methodical at what they do, and they have some pretty good players. This isn't going to be an easy game. I know we're not overlooking them at all. We know a win assures us a home playoff game, and we're going to go out there and take care of business.”

Herron said his team must avoid turning the ball over and get out of the gate quickly against Berea.

“You never want to allow a team to hang around,” he said. “We need to go out there and take what they give us. We've been playing better lately and we have some players healed up and eligible to play that has made us better.

“The key for us is to execute on offense and not turn the ball over,” he added. “If we can do that, I believe we will be fine.”
