CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Staff Writer

CORBIN — The Corbin Lady Redhounds wasted no time getting past George Rogers Clark Thursday, cruising to the 2-0 (25-15 and 25-16) win to improve to 8-5 on the season.

Allison Worthy led the way for Corbin with 10 service aces in the match, while Cheyenne Johnson added seven points on serve.

As Liberty Roberts and company get set to hit the home stretch of the regular season she said she was pleased with the progress her team has made lately, specifically against the Lady Cardinals in Thursday’s match.

“We had played them at the Bluegrass Games and they beat us in three sets, so I’m really happy with the improvement we made,” Roberts said. “Our girls did a great job of not letting up and we never really let them get any kind of momentum in the match.

“Allison Worthy did a great job with 10 aces and even though they weren’t aces, Cheyenne Johnson was really on her serve tonight,” she added. “Overall it was a good effort by our team and I was really happy to get the win.”

Corbin opened the first set by jumping out to a 3-0 lead. Charlotte Hampl helped the cause in the first set by serving for four straight points to give Corbin an 18-11 lead.

The Lady Redhounds never looked back as they led the entire way en route to the 25-15 win.

GRC looked poised to tie things up as things got underway in the second set, but the Lady Redhounds quickly erased a 4-1 deficit on the serve of Johnson to take a 7-4 lead.

The Lady Cardinals put up a fight until Worthy took over on serve with Corbin leading 10-6. Worthy rattled off 10 straight points, nine of which were aces, to push her team’s lead to 20-6.

GRC out together a rally of sorts, but the Lady Redhounds eventually ended things with the 25-16 win.

After seeing the improvements the Lady Redhounds made, Roberts admitted that this is the time of the season she expects to see her team playing better and said hopefully it will continue to be a trend.

“I think playing the schedule we have played has really helped us to get better as the season has progressed,” Roberts said. “We’ve been able to play some teams that have challenged us and I think it’s starting to show up.

“Hopefully we can keep our momentum heading in that direction and get ready for the postseason,” she added. “That’s what we’re working toward, so we have to keep improving as we go.”
