CHARLESTON, S.C. — Darren McWhorter’s North Laurel Jaguars evened their record at 5-5 on the season after defeating Bishop Ireton, Va., 4-3, in the Hanahan Classic.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when the Jaguars (5-5) scored four runs to take a 4-0 edge while Bishop Ireton answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.
The four-run fifth inning was all North Laurel needed.
“It was good to get the win,” McWhorter said. “We knew coming down here we were going to face some very good teams and that’s what has happened. They were very solid and anytime you can get a win down here, it’s big.”
Eighth grader Weston Griebel continued to shine and picked up the win by pitching five innings while senior Marcus Carson tossed the final two innings to get the save.
“Weston did a good job for us,” McWhorter said. “Our pitchers start to lose some of their go-go juice in the fifth inning and it happened tonight.”
