CHARLESTON, S.C. — The North Laurel Jaguars fought back from a 5-3 deficit before falling to Wando, S.C., 9-6.

Wando led 2-0 after the first inning and 5-3 going into the fourth inning before seeing the Jaguars answering with a four-run fourth inning to take a 6-5 lead.

North Laurel’s lead didn’t last long, though.

Wando scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and added an insurance run in the sixth to pick up the three-run win.

“They were a very good team,” North Laurel coach Darren McWhorter said. “They really hit the ball well, but we never quit. They jumped on us early and I was proud of the way we fought back.

“I’m not disappointed at all with this loss,” he added. “We gave ourselves a chance of winning late and we almost pulled it off. Like I said, this was a really good team we played. They had a very good pitcher and we hadn’t seen a guy like that so far this year. Marcus started the game with a hit and stole a base and then he struck out the next six batters he faced.”

Byron Rice and Marcus Carson each finished with two hits apiece in the loss while Weston Griebel and Ethan Maxey each had a hit.

“We got back in the game because of some timely hits,” McWhorter said. “I was pleased with our hitting. We started to figure things out at the plate and made a game of it.”
