South London's bats come alive against North Laurel Blue

By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

SOUTH LONDON — North Laurel’s Blue Minor League All-Stars failed to cash in on some early scoring opportunities against rival South London and in the end, their counterparts took advantage of the situation.

North Laurel Blue left three runners in scoring position during the game’s first three innings and South London responded by jumping out to a 4-0 lead and never looking back during their 11-1 convincing win Sunday.

“Our bats finally came around. I knew they would, it was just a matter of when,” South London coach Ryan Sizemore said. “These kids have shown me the past two weeks they can hit the ball and I knew they would come around. I was hoping it wouldn’t be so late, but they did come around.”

South London scored four runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Eli Sizemore and broke the game open in the fifth inning by scoring five runs with two outs.

“That was huge,” Sizemore said of his son’s home run. “The ball hung in the air forever. I knew it was gone and we needed that for some confidence. Our bats and pitching are our strong points. We just need to continue to play well.”

Sizemore’s squad put the finishing touches on the win in the sixth inning by adding two insurance runs.

The win advances South London to the Area 2 title game Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Clay County Gold.
