LETCHER COUNTY — The North Laurel Jaguars dropped their second straight decision Saturday, falling to East Ridge, 65-53, in the Whitaker Bank Classic at Letcher County Central.

The loss comes two days after the Jaguars lost a thrilling triple-overtime game to Jackson County Thursday.

Kendrick Henson led North Laurel in the scoring column with 17 points, 15 of which came via the three-point line, but East Ridge’s Johnny Miller led all scorers with 21 for the Warriors.

The Jaguars struggled in the early stages as East Ridge jumped out to a 17-7 lead as the first quarter came to a close.

North Laurel managed to trim the gap by three points, outscoring their opponent 14-11 to make the score 28-21 at halftime.

As the third quarter got underway, North Laurel gained momentum and was able to outscore the Warriors 16-9 in the period to tie things up at 37 points apiece to start the fourth quarter.

East Ridge turned the tables in the Jaguars in the final eight minutes of play, putting together a 28-point effort to close the game. The 12-point margin in fourth-quarter scoring was the difference in the game as the Warriors picked up the 65-53 win.

“We got off to a slow start and dug ourselves a hole, but were able to put a good second and third quarter together to tie it going into the fourth,” North Laurel coach Brad Sizemore said. “We just didn’t have any legs to finish the game.”

“I was happy with Kendrick (Henson) today as he got going offensively with five threes,” he added. “We need that from him every night.”

Elijah Jervis added 10 points in the win, while Peyton Broughton scored 9.

The loss sends North Laurel to 2-2 on the season as they get set to face Rockcastle County on Tuesday and travel to Harlan County for a 13th Region match-up against the Black Bears Wednesday.
