ONEIDA BAPTIST — North Laurel seniors Marcus Carson, Kendrick Henson and Austin Rush stepped up their play with the absence of teammate Jake Allen Friday, leading the Jaguars past 49th District foe Oneida Baptist Friday, 99-32.
The trio combined to score 48 points in the 67-point win, as Henson led all scorers with a 21-point, nine assist effort. Rush added 16 points while Carson finished the game with 11 points and 10 assists.
“Obviously we played better than we did on Tuesday,” North Laurel coach Brad Sizemore said. “We were able to play a lot of kids and I just thought we played a lot more organized. We had some days to actually work in practice with not having Jake right now and we played a whole lot better.
“I was really pleased with Marcus, Kendrick and Austin,” he added. “They all played better and cut down on their turnovers. Marcus played good and Kendrick shot the ball well and Austin had another good game scoring for us. We just need to continue to play like this.”
Eighth grader Peyton Broughton also scored in double figures for the second straight game by finishing with a 12-point effort.
North Laurel (2-0) jumped out to a 27-10 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. By the time halftime rolled around, the Jaguars held a commanding 50-21 lead over the Mountaineers.
Sizemore’s squad used a 30-7 run in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
North Laurel will be off until Thursday’s 49th District showdown at home against Jackson County.
“We’ll have some days to prepare for them,” Sizemore said. “The game will allow us to see where we are at right now.”
