CORBIN — The Corbin Redhounds reached the 20-win mark for the seventh time in 10 seasons with a 78-69 win over Rockcastle County Thursday, improving them to 20-6 on the year.
Corbin’s seniors came up big on Senior Night for head coach Tony Pietrowski, accounting for 55 of Corbin’s 78 points, while Hunter Grubb led the way with a 24-point effort, knocking down four 3-pointers in the process. Robbie Igo added 18 points and Kevin Goins chipped in 10.
Afterward Pietrowski commended his team for hanging tough and gave Grubb credit for his stellar play when it counted most.
“We lose the game without Hunter (Grubb),” Pietrowski said. “He hit two threes when we were kind of rattled because they stifled us defensively.
“We had a few bad possessions and we were really back on our heels,” he added. “Like he’s done all season, Hunter made a few big shots that got us back on track and went ahead and propelled us to the win.”
Rockcastle grabbed a 13-12 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Corbin outscored the Rockets 18-10 in the second period to lead 30-23 at halftime.
A 25-20 third period extended the Redhounds’ lead to 55-43 with eight minutes to play. Rockcastle County’s Ashton Arvin sparked the Rockets’ comeback in the late stages of the game, scoring 10 of his 18 points in the final period.
The spark Arvin provided was not enough in the end as the Redhounds pulled away late to earn the 78-69 win.
