CORBIN — After knocking off Williamsburg 81-55 Tuesday, the Corbin Redhounds are one win away from locking up the top spot in next month’s 50th District Tournament.

But Corbin head coach Tony Pietrowski isn’t about to count his chickens just yet. After Tuesday’s win, he was quick to point out that the only thing that has changed is the importance of Friday’s game against Whitley County.

“This win makes Friday’s game that much more important,” he said. “Whitley County has played some good basketball lately and we’re going to be at their place where they’ve already beaten South Laurel.

“I expect them to give us a battle, so we have to get two good days of practice in before that,” he added.

In the meantime, the Redhounds were threatened early by visiting Williamsburg Tuesday, but once the wheels started, Corbin was tough to stop.

Kevin Goins led the way for Corbin with 20 points, but the win was anything but a one-man show as three other Redhounds reached double figures.

Robbie Igo added 16, Kaleb Maguet scored 13 and Hunter Grubb chipped in 12 (all of which came via the three-pointer).

Williamsburg was paced by Corey Shelton’s 25-point showing, while Skylar Griffith added 17 in the loss.

Williamsburg took an early lead as the Redhounds made just two of their first 11 shot attempts and trailed.

Corbin recovered quickly, knocking down the final six shots of the period, taking a 19-17 lead as time wound down thanks to seven straight points by Goins.

The Redhounds extended the lead in the second quarter, outscoring Williamsburg 18-12 in the period to lead 37-29 at halftime.

Corbin continued to shoot well as the second half got underway as they connected on 10-of-14 shot attempts in the period to extend the lead to 62-44 with eight minutes to play in the game.

Corbin went to Igo on three of the first four possessions of the fourth quarter, giving him eight of his 16 points, as the lead continued to grow.

The Redhounds used a 15-5 run to close the game and seal the victory.

With the win, Corbin improves to 17-6 on the season and 4-1 in the 50th District. Pietrowski’s squad has also won seven of its last eight games, all against 13th Region foes.

Williamsburg falls to 3-10 on the season and is winless in four tries against 50th District opponents.
