WHITLEY COUNTY — Early in the season, Whitley County Colonels’ (7-13, 1-2) coach Jerry Overbey said he felt that if his team could gain some confidence, they might be able to win some games.

After Tuesday’s 70-63 win over Williamsburg (3-8, 0-2), the Colonels have now won two straight over 50th District opponents and Overbey said his team is right where he wants it to be.

“I think we’re starting to play well and that’s what you want at this time of the season,” Overbey said. “We had played well early in the season and the effort was there, but we just weren’t able to make some of the shots we were taking.

“It seems like over the last few games the shots are falling for us and the kids feed off of that,” he added. “Hopefully we can keep it up and carry this momentum into the homestretch of the season.”

The Colonels’ Michael Powers led all scorers with 28 points, while Williamsburg’s Skylar Griffith’s 26-point effort kept the Jackets in the game most of the evening.

After the loss, Williamsburg head coach Patrick Robinson said the differences in the game were turnovers and rebounding.

“Anytime you turn the ball over as many times as we did, you’re not going to win games,” Robinson said. “Add to that we were probably outrebounded three-to-one and that doesn’t help the matter at all.

Whitley County led 22-15 after the first quarter and extended the gap to 34-24 at halftime.

A 16-15 third-quarter effort extended the gap ever-so-slightly for the Colonels as they held a 50-39 lead with eight minutes to play in the game.

The Yellow Jackets managed to cut the gap to five points (63-58) as time wound down in the game, but they could not get any closer.
