LOG MOUNTAIN — The South Laurel Cardinals continue to play well against 13th Region foes of late, knocking off Bell County Friday, 55-54.
The win improved the Cardinals to 7-8 on the season and is the third in a row against 13th region opponents after the Cardinals dropped the first two of the season.
South Laurel head coach Jeff Davis said he was pleased with the win, but admitted his team stole one from the Bobcats.
“We really got away with one tonight, but we’ll take it,” Davis said. “Our kids are playing well right now, but we still have to do some things better as a team.”
Bell County led early on, holding a 17-13 lead after the first quarter, but the Cardinals turned the tables in the second to tie things up at 30 apiece.
The Bobcats used a 15-12 third-quarter effort to grab a 45-42 lead as the game headed to the fourth quarter.
The Cardinals battled back in the final eight minutes as Zac Baxter scored seven of his 15 points in the period to help lead the way for South Laurel as they pulled out the 55-54 win. Matt Slavey led the Cardinals with 19 points.
South Laurel will be back in action Tuesday when they travel to Knox Central to face the Panthers.
