North Laurel drops close games to Owensboro Catholic and Ballard

LOUISVILLE — The North Laurel Lady Jaguars didn’t come away with any wins during their trip over the weekend to participate in the Ballard Invitational, but they gained valuable experience while showing they can play with the top teams in the state.

The No. 5 ranked Lady Jaguars (2-3) dropped a 3-2 decision to Owensboro Catholic before falling to Ballard Friday, 3-1.

North Laurel ran into a solid Boyle County team on Saturday and fell, 4-0.

The Lady Jaguars jumped on the Lady Aces early with two runs in the first inning. North Laurel’s Sydney Herrell reached base with a single and Blake Johnson got on base thanks to an error. Megan Baldwin drove in Herrell with a sacrifice fly to left field while Vanessa Smith’s double scored Johnson.

Owensboro Catholic responded with a run in the bottom of the first inning and took control of the game for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Ballard 3, North Laurel 1

The Lady Bruins jumped out to a 3-0 lead by scoring a run apiece in the first three innings. North Laurel tried to rally in the sixth inning, as Herrell reached base with a single and later scored on an error. The Lady Jaguars had runners on second and third with two outs before Emily Sears grounded out to end the game.

Boyle County 4, North Laurel 0

The Lady Jaguars ran into a buzz saw against the defending 12th Region champions.

Boyle County pitcher Hannah Miniard struck out 17 batters and allowed only two hits during the Lady Rebels’ four-run win.

Boyle County broke the game open with two runs in the third inning while adding two more in the fourth.
