Lady Colonels win Berea Classic

BEREA — The Berea Holiday Classic looked more like a Tri-County tournament when all was said and done.

After both Corbin and Whitley County won three straight games, the stage was set for the first showdown of the season between the two. The Lady Colonels drew first blood by coming away with a 65-57 win as Donnie Jones' squad moved to 9-2 on the season.

“It was a good tournament for us,” Jones said.  “We played up and down, but in the end we did what we had to do. You don't really want to have to play a district rival three or four times a year, but we had some kids that stepped up.”

“Defensively we're still nowhere near where we need to be,” Jones added. "We've got to get better playing man-to-man defense. We've got to get better running the ball and getting the ball where it needs to be, but overall I think we're playing alright right now.”

Corbin coach Jason McDaniel said he was pleased with his team's effort despite the loss in the finals.

“We played three pretty good teams to begin.” McDaniel said. “I thought we shot the ball extremely well throughout most of the tournament.

“Against Whitley County, I have to tip my hat to them,” he added. “I thought they played an outstanding game. We didn't shoot the ball very well and it enabled to Whitley to stay in their zone.”
