Barbourville still unbeaten after win over Pineville, Corbin, KY

CORBIN — By Chris Parsons / Sports Editor

PINEVILLE — The Barbourville Lady Tigers improved to 3-0 on the season with a 60-39 win over Pineville on the road Thursday.

Kara Erslan led the way with 23 points and nine rebounds and Kelsey Erslan scored 14 and grabbed 16 rebounds for a double-double. Amber Mills added 10 points and nine boards.

After the win, Barbourville head coach Andrea Hillard said she was pleased with her team’s effort, but was quick to point out the team’s shooting woes throughout the game.

“I was pleased with the effort of our girls, but we missed 19 layups in this game,” Hillard said. “We could have scored 100 points in this game because the effort and really, every part of the game, was there.

“We did a good job getting assists and we did great as far as rebounding,” she added. “We just have to make those easy shots when we have them or else it’s going to cost us.”

Barbourville took the early lead and never looked back, leading 13-9 after the first quarter and 26-18 at halftime.

The Lady Tigers kept the pressure on in the third quarter as they doubled Pineville’s offensive output for the period, 14-7, pushing the margin to 40-25 with one quarter left to play in the contest.

Pineville made a solid effort in the fourth quarter, scoring in double figures for the first time in the game, but Barbourville’s 20-14 effort in the final eight minutes sealed the 60-39 victory.

With their perfect record in tact, Barbourville now gets set to host defending 13th Region Champion Corbin Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Hillard said the name on the jersey won’t affect how her team prepares for the next game.

“We’re well aware of what Corbin accomplished last season, but that won’t change the way we prepare for our next game,” Hillard said. “We’ll come in tomorrow and get ready for that game the same way we did for the game against Pineville.

“We have to play well and we can’t really worry about who we’re playing,” she added. “We’ll focus on the things that we need to improve on and go from there.”
