MCREARY CENTRAL — The North Laurel Jaguars started one if the team’s most important weeks of the regular season in fine fashion Monday, cruising to a 13-0 victory over McCreary Central on the road.

After the win, North Laurel coach Darren McWhorter talked about how important this week’s stretch is to the Jaguars if they hope to make a late-season run at a district and region title.

“We have some games against some really good teams this week and I think these games are going to let us gauge where we are as a team,” McWhorter said. “We have Hazard, Corbin, Harlan County and Williamsburg, so that’s going to allow us to play against some of the better teams in our region and in our area.

“I told our kids that it was important to come out and start this week on a high note and that’s what they did tonight,” he added. “I give the kids credit because they hit the ball up and down the lineup, while our defense did a good job of backing up Austin Thompson on the mound.”

University of Kentucky signee Marcus Carson paced the Jaguars with a 2-for-3 effort as he tallied a pair of triples in the game.

Logan Mallory and Cole Lewis also went 2-for-3 in the game, as Lewis collected a pair of doubles and Mallory with one two-base hit in the game.

Austin Thompson did the bulk of the work for McWhorter though, pitching five innings of one-hit baseball while also going 2-for-4 at the plate for the Jaguars.

North Laurel jumped ahead with a four-run second inning and pushed the gap to 5-0 at the end of the third.

An eight-run fifth inning made the score 13-0 as Thompson closed things out in the bottom of the fifth to seal the win.

The Jaguars will be back in action today when they host Hazard for a 5:30 p.m. scheduled start time.
