What a year!

2013 was a year to remember when it comes to sports

CORBIN — 1. Knox County makes run to LL World Series

By Chris Parsons / Sports Editor

After an impressive run through the Area, District and State Tournaments, the Knox County Little League All Stars found themselves in a rare position — with a chance to move on to Williamsport, Pa. to play in the Little League World Series.

Things didn't go as well as the team hoped for, but that didn't put a damper on the run the team made nor the excitement that was generated not only locally, but throughout the Commonwealth.

Donations poured in from around the state to make sure the dream season wouldn't come to an end until it absolutely had to.

Knox County dropped its first two games of the Great Lakes Regional Tournament (Hagerstown, Ind. and Jackie Robinson West, Ill.) before the team picked up a win over Gross Pointe Woods-Shores, Mich.

A 7-3 loss to Burlington, Wisc. ended the hopes of advancing to Williamsport, but Knox County's run puts the team at the top of the list when it comes to sports stories in 2013.

2. Yellow Jackets play for state championship

By Chris Parsons / Sports Editor

Though they were tabbed as one of the teams to beat to start the 2013 football season, the excitement that was generated as the Williamsburg Yellow Jackets made the school's first-ever trip to the KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Championship game was unprecedented in the small town in southeast Kentucky.

As the season progressed it looked more and more like the Yellow Jackets were headed for a showdown fans had been hoping for — a region championship rematch against Hazard. That showdown came to pass with Williamsburg picking up the win to advance to the state semifinals, where they knocked off Raceland at home.

In the end, a speedy and experienced Mayfield team proved too much for the Yellow Jackets in the state finals. The good news is Williamsburg should be in the hunt once more in 2014.
