PINEVILLE — The Lynn Camp Lady Wildcats entered first round tournament action in the Pine Mountain Classic Friday afternoon at Pineville High School.
Knott County Central was looking to slow down the Lady Wildcats' 8-1 start to the season, but was unable to make a dent in the Lynn Camp loss column, falling by a score of 49-40 to Richard Jones' squad.
Jones commented on his team's performance.
"We did not play very well," Jones said. "Three of our seniors got in foul trouble, but we got some good help off the bench from Ginger White and Brianna Hollin and they really picked us up."
The Lady Wildcats and Lady Patriots struggled putting points on the board very early in the contest.
Both teams could not find the hoop until 3:20 remaining in the first quarter when Marita Burke's break away layup off a steal gave the Lady Wildcats the opening basket of the game.
Knott County Central's Savannah Hatmaker connected on a three-point field goal and led her team to an early 7-4 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Knott County Central was plagued by Lynn Camp's zone defense in the first half, whereas Lynn Camp was troubled by Knott County Central's man-to-man defense.
Both squads picked up the offensive pace in the second quarter as Lynn Camp took the lead on a Brooklyn Bryant three-point basket. Hatmaker hit another three-point basket in the quarter for Knott County Central, but Burke responed and continued to score for the Lady Wildcats as she contributed six points in the quarter to help give Lynn Camp an 18-15 lead at halftime.
The Lady Wildcats stretched the lead to double-digit territory in the third quarter as Lynn Camp went to their senior Heather Wilson and freshman Brooklyn Bryant who combined for a 10-point scoring effort as the fouls began to mount for the Lady Wildcats.
Jessica May picked up her third foul and Marita Burke was charged with her fourth foul. Both went to the bench during the quarter, but Lynn Camp's Brianna Hollin picked up five points on two consecutive possessions for Lynn Camp who maintained a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter.
The loss of Lynn Camp's size underneath the basket in May and speed in Burke soon became evident as Knott County Central began a run in the fourth quarter.
Kristen Waugh led a fourth-quarter rally by knocking down a three-point basket and connecting on several free throws, leading the Lady Patriots on a 7-0 run to trim Lynn Camp's lead to 37-32.
Jones re-entered May and Burke and the Lady Wildcats responded with five free throws to push the lead back out to 10 points and the Lady Patriots could not recover from the deficit in the closing minutes of the game.
Lynn Camp was led in scoring by Marita Burke who had 12 points on the afternoon.
