Yellow Jackets fall to Bell County, 60-53, Corbin, KY

CORBIN — By Dan Connell / Staff Writer

LOG MOUNTAIN — The Bell County Bobcats were looking to protect their five-game winning streak at home on Tuesday night against the Yellow Jackets of Williamsburg.

The Jackets were hoping to snap a two-game losing streak to stay above the .500 mark on the early season.

Both teams battled to the closing minutes, but it was Bell County who emerged victorious with a 60-53 win to improve to 6-2 on the season.

“The kids that finished the game tonight played tough,” Patrick Robinson said. “We had a chance to win it at the end, but made a few little mistakes late.  Offensively, I thought we played well.”

Williamsburg opened play to an 18-6 lead early in the contest.

Just when it seemed Williamsburg had the momentum, the Bobcats returned fire to close the quarter on an 8-0 scoring run.

Bell County eventually took a 24-22 lead, but the Yellow Jackets closed the half scoring nine points on three consecutive possessions, but Bell County answered with field goals from Patterson and Josh Asher to close the half in a 31-31 tie.

The see-saw battle continued in the third period as the teams traded baskets and exchanged the lead on several possessions throughout most of the third quarter. A two point lead was as big as both teams saw during the quarter.

Tyler Potter's three-point field goal gave Bell County a 53-48 lead with under 3:00 remaining in regulation and Williamsburg did not recover from that point in the game.

Williamsburg was led in scoring by Dalton Sizemore with 23 points. Bell County was led by Tyler Potter with 15 on the night. The loss slips Williamsburg to 2-3 on the season.
