Injury Riddled

By Tim Branstetter / Staff Writer

The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets got off to a rough start thanks to several key injuries. Although the injury bug never went away, they managed to salvage a solid season that resulted in a home playoff game.

“I’m proud of these kids,” Williamsburg coach Jerry Herron said. “They could have tucked their tails and laid down on us several times, but they didn’t.”

The Yellow Jackets started their season with a 38-16 win over Jellico, but then lost four straight for a 1-4 record.

A big 46-36 win over Berea got the Yellow Jackets back on track and they used that momentum to beat Clinton County 54-26 to improve to a 2-4 record.

A tough 14-12 loss to Campbellsville on the road was hard to swallow, but they responded with a 26-12 victory over Lynn Camp.

“Our kids really stuck together,” Herron said. “The biggest thing was our senior class really stepped up. We picked up some kids and they turned out to be good athletes. The Lynn Camp win was big. It secured a home playoff game.”

The final regular season game turned out to be a 44-43 win over Pineville on the road. The Yellow Jackets were eliminated in the playoffs by Fairview 33-8.

“This team is a bunch of really good kids,” Herron said. “They have a lot of Jacket pride. It was a lot of fun coaching this group. This was my first senior class and it is really sad to see them leave.”

Herron added the Yellow Jackets have something to be proud of.

“These kids have come a long way,” he said. “They have done some great things. They are one of the winningest classes in Williamsburg history. I am really proud of what these guys have done.”
