Road racing update

Runners from the Tri-County have had a busy two months competing in races around the region.
Eighteen runners from the area converged on Indianapolis in October to take part in the Indianapolis Marathon, Half Marathon and 5-K road races. The day, Oct. 17, was highlighted by Paula Jackson’s finish in the marathon where she ran a time good enough to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
Jackson, 45, of Corbin, finished the 26.2-mile race with a time of 3:51. The marathon was her first attempt at that distance. Jackson spent several months preparing for the race. She trains with the Falls Road Runners running club.
Another area racer, Scott Payne of Heidrick, just missed qualifying for Boston in his age group. It was also his first attempt. Payne, 36, missed the mark by just more than a minute. His finishing time was 3:17:17.
Others competing in the marathon and their times were:
Bill Hanson, Corbin, 3:35:39; Brad Freeman, Corbin, 3:52:28; Bobby Partin, Corbin, 3:55:56; Pat Derickson, London, 4:07:43; Darrell Sergent, Harlan, 4:28:56.
Debbie and Allen Lewis led area runners in the half marathon finishing with times of 1:48:24 and 1:49:18, respectively. The half marathon covers a 13.1-mile course.

Chris Jones, Corbin, 2:04:56; Vicky Collette, Corbin, 2:12:58; Lisa Callihan, Corbin, 2:12:58; Keith Card, London, 2:13:46; Rick Fowler, Corbin, 2:17:03; Sue Hanson, Corbin, 2:26:58; Richard Derickson, London, 2:32:16.
Two locals ran in the 5-K race (3.1 miles). Brad Kagin finished with a time of 22:52 while Kathy Noble posted a 38:52 finish. Kagin finished third in his age group.
Saturday morning, Nov. 20, eight Tri-Countians participated in the Oak Ridge, TN half marathon. Bill Hanson and Scott Payne led the way, finishing 12th and 14th overall in the field of more than 200 runners. Hanson, 47, placed first in his age group with a time of 1:32:41. Payne was second in his age group at 1:33:40. Also placing in her age group was Sue Hanson. Hanson, 50, took top honors with a time of 2:16:49.
