Bye week was a plus for Jackets

By Les Dixon / Sports Editor

The Williamsburg Yellow Jackets beat district rival Lynn Camp two weeks ago to finish as runner up in the district. Last week, the Jackets had a much needed bye.

“We needed the bye week. We have had injuries and sickness all year, and we tried to get a little healthier last week,” said Yellow Jackets’ coach Jerry Herron. “We’ve had kids step up and play well, and getting the other kids healthy helps our football team.”

The Yellow Jackets will take on the Pineville Mountain Lions this Friday, in what will be the last game of the regular season. The Yellow Jackets will look to end the season on a good note against Pineville, though the game has no affect on the postseason.

The Yellow Jackets will once again rely on quarterback Ryan Moses, who has over 700 yards rushing and 2,200 yards passing, to go along with 31 total touchdowns on the season. Moses and his corps of receivers look to finish the season off strong against the Mountain Lions.

“Anytime you can go into the playoffs with a win, it is a good thing. Our kids look forward to the playoffs, but we want to go down there and take care of business,” said Herron. “We want to come away from the game with no injuries and play well.”

Pineville poses a similar style of offense compared to Williamsburg. The Mountain Lions will look to toss the ball around, while trying to maintain a balanced ground game.

“They have some good athletes, and a pretty good offense,” said Herron. “We have to make sure we play sound defensively. We have to make sure we are in the right place at the right time, and make tackles.”

With the runner-up finish in the district, the Jackets will host a home playoff game and take on Fairview. Williamsburg hopes to replicate the success they had last season when they finished runners-up in the region.

“Of course, we want to get back to where we were last season,” said Herron.
