Down 2-0 in the in the top of the sixth inning, an RBI single by South London’s J.J. Ramey cut North Laurel Green’s lead in half, but it was too little too late, as North Laurel was able to hold onto its lead and take a 2-1 victory during Minor League All Star action at Rotary Park Sunday in Corbin.
North Laurel’s Jack Capobianco turned in a solid performance on the mound, pitching five scoreless innings, striking out seven, giving up no walks and allowing only two hits.
South London got one of its few base runners during its first at bat when lead-off man Ryan Anders was hit by a pitch.
However, after Mason Dozier struck out, the next batter, Ramey hit into a double play, ending the inning.
Capobianco led off with a single for North Laurel and was able to score on an RBI single by Shane Caudill, giving North a 1-0 lead.
The game remained close, as Capobianco and South London’s Dozier carried out a pitcher’s dual on the mound for both teams.
Dozier pitched five innings, striking out one and giving up five hits.
North Laurel’s second run of the game came in bottom of the fourth inning when Jonathan Gambrel was able to reach home plate on an errant throw to third base giving North a 2-0 lead.
But South London would not give up so easily as during their last at bat, they were able to pick up one run on Ramey’s RBI single to score Ryan Anders.
With one out, and runners on first and second, South London had a chance to tie the game, but two consecutive strikeouts ended any chances of a rally and allowed North Laurel to advance.
