Whitley's back on track

By Jerry Burns / For The Times-Tribune

The Whitley County Lady Colonels captured their first win since May 1 after handing McCreary Central a 6-0 loss at home.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Lady Colonels, while improving Whitley County to 13-15 during the process.

Senior pitcher Danielle Lindsay limited the Lady Raiders to only one hit in the win, while the Lady Colonels pounded out 10.

Whitley County dropped an earlier decision to McCreary Central, 7-6.

“It’s a good game for us,“ Lady Colonel coach David Halcomb said. “We’ve been struggling as of late. This is a team that had beat us at their place at the beginning of the season, 7-6. To come out and shut them out, I was real pleased with that. Danielle Lindsay pitched for us — she’s been out injured, so it was great to have her back today. She’s been out for a couple weeks, so it was good to see her out there.”

Not only did the Lady Colonels back Lindsay on the field, they also showed up to play at the plate. In the bottom of the first inning, Whitley County brought two runners home — both of which were batted in by Lindsay.

They also scored again in the bottom of the second, thanks to an error made by McCreary Central. Once again, Lindsay drove in two of Whitley’s three runs in the inning.

“Danielle is probably one of our best hitters, too,” Halcomb said. “She hit the ball well today and is a good power hitter for her size. Danielle does a good job. She’s a senior and we expect big things from her and she came through for us.”

Not to be over-shadowed by the play of Lindsay, teammates Cecilia Garcia and Natasha Perkins also turned in big plays that led to Whitley County’s victory.

Garcia hit a double in the bottom of the third to bring home a run, while Perkins stepped up in the bottom of the sixth inning — picking up a double, which also drove in a run.

Whitley County will be back in action today against Bell County and will host Bryan Station Friday and Knox Central Saturday.
