Whitley rolls

By Jerry Burns For The Times-Tribune

After seeing his team go through a season-worse eight-game losing skid during the past two weeks, Whitley County coach John Smith has to be happy with the way things are going right now.

His Colonels won their third straight game after knocking off Lynn Camp 14-4 Monday.

Whitley County took advantage of four Lynn Camp errors and never looked back after scoring five runs in the second inning and seven in the fourth.

“The kids started rushing themselves, and second guessing where to throw the ball,” Lynn Camp coach Dane May said. “When you don’t trust your mechanics, that’s when you start making errors — physical and mental, that’s just how it goes.”

Lynn Camp jumped out to a 1-0 lead set up by a lead-off double by Wildcat Tyler Brock. The second inning was the turning point in the game when the Colonels fought back to score five runs thanks to two RBIs by Cody Jones, along with run-scoring hits by Jeremy Daniels and David Rhodes.

Lynn Camp mounted a comeback in the third inning by scoring two runs off of Brad Bargo’s two-run double.

But Whitley County put the game away in the fifth inning by scoring seven runs. Daniel’s three-run triple highlighted the inning.

At the bottom of the fifth, the Colonels scored two additional runs behind the offense of Ted Clifford.

“We finally have started hitting the ball, getting nine hits today,” Whitley County coach John Smith. “I don’t think we’ve had a total of nine hits in our last eight games. It doesn’t sound like it anyway. We hit the ball well and ran the bases well. I think we had 11 stolen bases today. Shawn Harris, our freshman pitcher, came on and pitched well today. He’s thrown some good varsity innings for us this year. I think he did a great job today.

“At the end of the season like this, you don’t get to take a lot of batting practice because you are playing everyday,” he added. “So, we took the time we had Saturday and tried to correct some problems. I think that definitely paid off today.”
